About this product

Continuous low-level heat in a flexible single-use patch

FlexEze Heat Patch is a single-use, air-activated heat patch manufactured by FlexEze, a 100% Australian-owned company operated by healthcare professionals.

It is registered on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods as a medical device, a higher regulatory category than the listed medicines and wellness products elsewhere in our stock range. As a TGA-registered medical device, FlexEze has been assessed for safety and performance, and its clinical use in major Australian hospitals has been validated through published research.

The patch measures approximately 10cm x 13cm and produces up to 12 hours of continuous low-level heat at approximately 40°C when exposed to air. It is drug-free, odourless, and flexible enough to move with the body.

At Lakeside Chiropractic we sell single patches. They are ideal for patients who want to trial the product, use it intermittently, or purchase one to use alongside the FlexEze Body Wrap.

How it works

Simple air-activated heat science

FlexEze patches generate heat through a simple, well-understood exothermic reaction.

The contents — iron powder, activated charcoal, vermiculite, salt, and water — are sealed in an oxygen-proof packet. When the packet is opened, the iron powder reacts with oxygen from the air through oxidation to produce heat. This is the same controlled rusting process used in hand warmers and surgical warming products worldwide.

Ingredients

Drug-free and odourless

Iron powder, activated charcoal, vermiculite, salt (sodium chloride), and water.

The contents are eco-friendly and biodegradable. After use, the contents can be emptied into garden soil where they act as a soil conditioner. The patch contains no medications, fragrances, or latex.

What it does

Portable heat therapy that supports movement

FlexEze delivers sustained, low-level heat to the site of pain without reheating, plugging in, or staying still.

1

Continuous heat

Delivers continuous low-level heat at approximately 40°C for up to 12 hours at the site of pain.

2

Muscle relaxation

Relaxes tight and tense muscles by increasing local tissue temperature and improving tissue extensibility.

3

Circulation support

Increases local blood circulation, improving oxygen and nutrient delivery to affected tissue.

4

Pain modulation

Reduces pain perception through thermoreceptor activation, a well-established mechanism of heat analgesia.

5

Drug-free support

Non-invasive heat therapy with no systemic effects, suitable for patients who cannot or prefer not to use oral analgesics.

How it helps you

Evidence-supported heat wrap therapy

Continuous low-level heat wrap therapy has one of the strongest evidence bases of any non-pharmacological intervention for acute and subacute low back pain.

  1. More effective than ibuprofen and paracetamol for acute low back pain: A 2002 RCT found continuous low-level heat wrap therapy provided significantly greater pain relief than ibuprofen or acetaminophen in acute non-specific low back pain.
  2. Heat plus exercise outperforms either alone: A 2005 RCT found that combining heat wrap therapy with exercise produced greater functional improvement than either heat alone, exercise alone, or control.
  3. Used in Australian hospital emergency departments: FlexEze participated in a clinical care model trial at four major NSW hospitals published in BMJ Open.
  4. Recommended in Australia's Clinical Care Standard for Low Back Pain: Heat wraps with physical activity are recommended as a first-line non-pharmacological treatment for acute low back pain.
  5. Useful beyond back pain: Heat mechanisms also apply to neck and shoulder tension, knee stiffness, menstrual pain, muscular aches, and joint discomfort from mild osteoarthritis.
  6. Fits chiropractic care: Heat may help reduce muscle guarding and support active movement between visits.

How to use

Apply to clothing only, not directly to skin

  1. Open the outer foil pouch only when ready to use. The patch activates immediately on exposure to air.
  2. If using with the FlexEze Body Wrap, insert the patch into the wrap pocket without removing the adhesive backing paper, with the paper side facing away from your body.
  3. If using without the body wrap, remove the protective backing paper and adhere the patch to the inside of your clothing over the area of pain. Do not apply the adhesive directly to skin.
  4. Allow 30 minutes for the patch to reach full temperature. Heat will be felt within minutes of opening.
  5. Wear for up to 12 hours. Do not use on the same area for more than 12 hours in any 24-hour period.
  6. Do not use while sleeping, overnight, or with tight waistbands or belts pressing directly on the patch.
  7. If the patch becomes too hot or skin sensitivity occurs, remove it immediately.
  8. The patch is single use. Once it has gone cold and hardened, it cannot be reactivated.
  9. Disposal: empty the cooled contents into garden soil as a soil conditioner. Dispose of outer packaging in general waste.

Important — please read before use

  • Do not apply the adhesive directly to skin. Always apply to clothing only, or use with the FlexEze Body Wrap.
  • Do not use while sleeping or overnight — unsupervised use increases the risk of burns.
  • Do not use on broken skin, bruises, open wounds, or swellings.
  • Do not use in combination with other heat sources on the same area simultaneously.
  • Do not use on infants or children under 12 years old, or on anyone who cannot remove the patch themselves if it becomes uncomfortable.
  • Consult your chiropractor or doctor before use if you have diabetes, poor circulation, peripheral neuropathy, rheumatoid arthritis, impaired skin sensation, or are pregnant.
  • Do not cut, fold, or knead the patch.
  • Keep out of reach of children and animals. If contents are ingested or enter the eyes, rinse with water and seek medical advice.
  • Your risk of skin burns increases with age and with prolonged or repeated application. Monitor frequently during use, especially for the first hour.
FAQs

Frequently asked questions

A wheat bag provides high heat for 20 to 30 minutes, then rapidly cools. The evidence for heat therapy in back pain is specifically for continuous low-level heat sustained over hours — not brief high-heat application. FlexEze maintains approximately 40°C for up to 12 hours, which matches the protocols used in the clinical trials that established the evidence base. It also allows you to stay active throughout the day, which is a key component of why it works.

No — never apply the adhesive side directly to skin. The patch must be applied to clothing only, or used with the FlexEze Body Wrap. Direct skin contact with the adhesive increases the risk of skin irritation and burns. If you have sensitive skin, the body wrap option is preferable as it provides an additional layer between the patch and your body.

Using a FlexEze patch between or after chiropractic appointments is appropriate and often recommended by our chiropractors for patients with acute back pain or muscle tension. Check with your chiropractor about timing relative to your appointment — some practitioners prefer not to apply manual therapy over heated tissue.

During sleep you cannot monitor your skin response, and prolonged sustained pressure from a mattress combined with heat can significantly increase the risk of burns — particularly in older patients or those with reduced skin sensitivity. The maximum safe duration is 12 hours during waking hours when you can monitor and remove the patch if needed.

The FlexEze Body Wrap is designed to hold up to two patches simultaneously for a larger treatment area. Using multiple patches overlapping the same skin area is not recommended. If you have pain across a broad area, the body wrap with two patches is the appropriate configuration.

Yes — FlexEze is specifically tested for air travel safety. It is not combustible at altitude and will not trigger airport security alarms. Many patients use it during long flights for back pain management. It can be carried in hand luggage or checked baggage.

Topical rubs work as counterirritants — they create a sensation of warmth or cooling that distracts from pain, but they do not produce actual tissue heating. FlexEze produces genuine sustained thermal energy at the tissue level, increasing local blood flow and reducing muscle spasm through temperature-mediated mechanisms. They should not be used on the same area at the same time.
