About this product

A topical botanical gel for mild arthritis and joint pain

fisiocrem Joint Ease is a topical botanical gel manufactured by fisiocrem Australia, an Australian company that has been producing topical pain relief products since 2009.

It is listed on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods as a complementary medicine under AUST L 384978 — a listed therapeutic good approved for the indications stated on the label. This distinguishes it from the wellness products elsewhere in our stock range: Joint Ease has gone through the TGA's listing process and is approved for use for the temporary relief of symptoms of mild osteoarthritis, mild arthritis, and joint pain.

Listed medicines have been assessed by the TGA for safety, quality, and that the ingredients are accepted for the indications claimed. They are not required to meet the same level of clinical evidence as registered medicines. Always read the label and follow the directions for use.

Active ingredients

Botanical actives listed per gram of gel

The following active ingredients are listed in the document.

Boswellia serrata sap concentrated resin extract

10 mg/g equivalent to 100 mg/g fresh

Boswellia contains boswellic acids, particularly AKBA, which are specific inhibitors of 5-lipoxygenase. The document notes that evidence is primarily for oral use, with topical Boswellia evidence more limited.

Nigella sativa seed oil

50 mg/g

Nigella sativa contains thymoquinone and other bioactive compounds with established anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. It is one of the two additional botanical ingredients added to fisiocrem Solugel to create the Joint Ease formulation.

Menthol

25 mg/g

A well-established topical counterirritant that activates TRPM8 cold receptors in the skin, producing a cooling sensation.

Arnica montana flower liquid extract

73.14 mg/g equivalent to 7.314 mg/g dry

Arnica has a long history of use in topical preparations for bruising, inflammation, and muscle pain. It is a core ingredient of the fisiocrem Solugel base from which Joint Ease is derived.

Calendula officinalis flower liquid extract

17.5 mg/g equivalent to 1.75 mg/g dry

Calendula contains flavonoids and triterpenes with anti-inflammatory and skin-soothing properties.

Hypericum perforatum flower liquid extract

17.5 mg/g equivalent to 1.75 mg/g dry

Hypericum contains hyperforin and hypericin and is a core ingredient of the fisiocrem Solugel base.

Melaleuca alternifolia leaf essential oil

7 mg/g

Tea tree oil is included for its supportive role in the formulation and contribution to the low-odour profile.

What it does

Temporary relief for mild osteoarthritis, mild arthritis, and joint pain

  1. Provides temporary relief of symptoms of mild osteoarthritis, mild arthritis, and joint pain when applied topically to the affected area.
  2. The menthol component creates an immediate cooling sensation on application, which acts as a topical counterirritant and provides fast onset of comfort.
  3. The botanical actives — particularly Boswellia and Nigella sativa — target inflammatory pathways that contribute to joint pain, stiffness, and swelling in mild arthritic conditions.
  4. Formulated as a low-odour, non-greasy, non-heat gel, making it practical for daily use on multiple joints without disrupting clothing or daily activity.
  5. Designed to improve joint mobility and stiffness alongside pain relief, making it useful as part of an active daily routine rather than just acute pain management.
How it helps you

Built on the fisiocrem Solugel base

fisiocrem Joint Ease builds on the fisiocrem Solugel base, which was evaluated in a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial. The study was funded by fisiocrem, which is a conflict of interest worth noting.

  1. Mild osteoarthritis and joint pain: Boswellia, Nigella sativa, and menthol address joint pain through complementary mechanisms.
  2. Stiffness and reduced joint mobility: The anti-inflammatory ingredients may help reduce synovial inflammation and tissue swelling that contribute to morning stiffness and restricted range of motion.
  3. Between chiropractic visits: Joint Ease is TGA-listed, low odour, non-greasy, and can be applied to multiple joints throughout the day.
  4. Hand, wrist, knee, hip, and foot joints: The product is specifically suited to smaller and peripheral joints.
  5. Supporting activity and movement: Topical pain management that enables continued activity can help break the pain, stiffness, and deconditioning cycle alongside chiropractic care and appropriate exercise guidance.
How to use

As directed on the TGA-listed label

  1. Apply a few grams, approximately 2 to 5g, of gel to the affected joint area 3 to 4 times daily, as required.
  2. Massage gently into the skin over the joint until fully absorbed.
  3. For ongoing joint support, consistent daily use is more effective than applying only during flare-ups.
  4. Wash hands after application unless the hands are the treated area.
  5. For external use only. Do not apply to broken, wounded, or inflamed skin.
  6. Avoid contact with eyes. If contact occurs, rinse thoroughly with water.
  7. If you have sensitive skin, apply a small test amount to a small area first and wait 24 hours before widespread use.
  8. If symptoms persist, worsen, or do not improve after 2 weeks of regular use, consult your chiropractor or GP.

Product comparison

What makes this different from doTERRA Ice Blue Rub or Stick?

The key difference is regulatory status and intended use. fisiocrem Joint Ease is TGA-listed as a complementary medicine for mild osteoarthritis and joint pain. The doTERRA products are cosmetic wellness products with no TGA listing. Joint Ease is specifically formulated for arthritic joint conditions using clinically recognised botanical anti-inflammatory ingredients, particularly Boswellia and Nigella sativa. The doTERRA products are better suited to muscle soreness, sports recovery, and general musculoskeletal discomfort.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

The key difference is regulatory status and intended use. fisiocrem Joint Ease is TGA-listed as a complementary medicine for mild osteoarthritis and joint pain. The doTERRA products are cosmetic wellness products with no TGA listing.

Yes. Joint Ease is specifically indicated for and suitable for use on small peripheral joints including the hands, fingers, wrists, ankles, and feet. The gel format absorbs well and is non-greasy, making it practical for hand use.

For most patients, topical application of Joint Ease is unlikely to interact with oral arthritis medications, as the gel has minimal systemic absorption. However, if you are on multiple medications or have complex medical history, checking with your GP or pharmacist is advisable. Do not use it as a reason to reduce or stop prescribed medication without medical guidance.

The menthol component provides an immediate cooling and soothing effect within minutes of application. The anti-inflammatory botanical ingredients work more gradually. The fisiocrem Solugel clinical trial found significant pain reduction within minutes of the first application, with continued improvement over 14 days of consistent use. Joint Ease builds on that base with additional actives.

The recommended dose is 3 to 4 times daily as required. Consistency matters more than the number of applications — applying it regularly at set times is more effective than applying it only when pain spikes.

The strongest evidence for Boswellia in osteoarthritis is for oral use. Topical Boswellia evidence is more limited; the NCCIH notes there is not yet enough high-quality evidence to confirm topical efficacy as a standalone claim. However, the TGA listing of Joint Ease reflects acceptance of the ingredient combination at the stated concentrations for the stated indications.
