About this product

A practitioner-only TCM formula for menopausal symptoms

Metagenics O-Lift is a TGA-listed complementary medicine manufactured by Metagenics (Aust) Pty Ltd.

It is formulated to help manage menopausal symptoms including hot flushes with perspiration, night sweats, fatigue, emotional changes, and mild anxiety.

The formula is based on Liu Wei Di Huang Wan, also known as Six Ingredient Pill with Rehmannia, one of the most widely used and longest-standing formulas in Traditional Chinese Medicine. It was first documented in a 12th century Chinese medical treatise, with two additional herbs included in O-Lift for enhanced symptom management.

In TCM theory, menopausal symptoms are associated with Kidney Yin Deficiency, where the cooling, nourishing, and fluid-regulating functions of the kidney system become insufficient.

Active ingredients per tablet

Traditional herbs for Yin nourishment and heat clearing

All amounts below are the dry herb equivalents per tablet.

Rehmannia glutinosa — 3.2g dry root

The primary herb in the formula. In TCM, prepared Rehmannia is the principal Kidney Yin tonic traditionally used for irregular menstruation, night sweats, sleeplessness, and fatigue.

Cornus officinalis — 1.6g dry fruit

Shan Zhu Yu is a key astringent herb traditionally used to help stabilise and retain fluids, reducing night sweats and excessive perspiration.

Dioscorea oppositifolia — 1.6g dry rhizome

Shan Yao is a gentle tonic for the kidney, spleen, and lung systems, included to support adrenal function and digestive health.

Ziziphus jujuba var. spinosa — 1.1g dry seed

Suan Zao Ren is a TCM calming herb traditionally used for insomnia, palpitations, irritability, and anxiety.

Paeonia suffruticosa — 920mg dry root bark

Mu Dan Pi helps clear heat generated from Yin Deficiency and has mild blood-moving properties.

Poria cocos — 920mg dry fruiting body

Fu Ling supports the spleen and heart in TCM and contributes gentle calming and digestive-protective effects.

Alisma orientale — 920mg dry rhizome

Ze Xie balances the heavy nature of Rehmannia by gently draining downward and clearing heat from the kidney and bladder system.

Anemarrhena asphodeloides — 890mg dry rhizome

Zhi Mu clears heat and nourishes Yin simultaneously, with specific relevance for hot flushes and night sweats.

Evidence

What we know and what we do not

  1. Traditional use: Liu Wei Di Huang Wan has been used continuously in Chinese medicine for over 800 years for the type of presentation O-Lift targets.
  2. TGA listing: TGA listing under AUST L acknowledges traditional use evidence as the basis for the accepted indications.
  3. Clinical research: Clinical studies exist, primarily from China. Memorial Sloan Kettering documents the formula's use for hot flashes, hypertension, and fatigue.
  4. Phytoestrogenic activity: Research has identified phytoestrogenic compounds in Rehmannia, Paeonia, and Anemarrhena.
  5. Evidence limits: High-quality randomised controlled trials specifically for Liu Wei Di Huang Wan in menopausal hot flushes to Western research standards are limited.
  6. Clinical context: Menopause is not a chiropractic condition, but menopausal symptoms can affect sleep, fatigue, joint pain, and low back discomfort that interact with chiropractic presentations.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Many of our female patients are perimenopausal or menopausal, and the hormonal changes of this transition commonly affect musculoskeletal health — contributing to joint pain, low back discomfort, fatigue, and disrupted sleep, all of which interact with chiropractic presentations. As a practitioner-only product, O-Lift is available here under clinical guidance as a supportive option for patients who want a plant-based approach to symptom management alongside their chiropractic care.

No. O-Lift is a herbal formula with no pharmaceutical hormones. Some of its herbs contain phytoestrogenic compounds that may provide mild oestrogen-like activity, but this is not equivalent to HRT in mechanism, potency, or regulatory status. For women with significant menopausal symptoms or those with bone health concerns, medical assessment and consideration of HRT remains important and should be discussed with a GP.

Traditional Chinese herbal formulas typically work gradually over weeks rather than providing immediate relief. Many practitioners observe improvements in hot flush frequency and severity, sleep quality, and fatigue over 4 to 8 weeks of consistent use. The acute dosing schedule of 3 tablets daily is used during periods of more intense symptoms.

You should discuss this with your prescribing GP before combining herbal oestrogen-activity products with pharmaceutical HRT, to avoid unanticipated additive hormonal effects.

No. O-Lift is fully plant-derived and free from animal products, dairy, lactose, eggs, gluten, wheat, nuts, yeast, soy protein, and artificial additives. It is suitable for vegan patients.

The Liu Wei Di Huang Wan formula has a very long record of safe traditional use. At the recommended doses it is generally well tolerated. For any supplement used over extended periods, periodic review with your practitioner is sensible to ensure continued appropriateness for your situation.
