What it does

Multipurpose moisture and conditioning support

Deep skin moisture

Acts as both a humectant and an emollient, helping draw moisture into the skin and seal it in.

Hair conditioning

Coats the hair shaft, smooths the cuticle, reduces frizz, and adds shine when used sparingly.

Scalp care

May support a healthier-feeling scalp environment when used as a pre-wash scalp treatment.

Lash and brow routine

Conditions and moisturises the follicle area and surrounding skin for a fuller, healthier-looking appearance.

Rough skin areas

Provides a rich barrier for dry elbows, knees, heels, cuticles, and other rough areas.

Carrier oil use

Can be used as a thick carrier oil to dilute essential oils for topical skin or scalp application.

Key ingredient

Ricinus Communis Seed Oil, certified organic

The sole ingredient is certified organic castor seed oil. Its primary fatty acid is ricinoleic acid, an omega-9 fatty acid that gives castor oil its thick texture and moisturising properties.

100% single-ingredient formula

No synthetic additives, fillers, fragrances, or blended oils.

Cold-pressed and unrefined

Processed without hexane and designed to retain the naturally rich feel of castor oil.

Ricinoleic acid-rich

Ricinoleic acid helps explain the oil's thick, cushioning feel and traditional use in skin and body wellness routines.

How it helps you

A simple support product for daily wellness routines

  1. Skin hydration and barrier support: Helps hydrate dry, rough, or stressed skin while reducing moisture loss.
  2. Traditional comfort use: Ricinoleic acid has demonstrated preliminary topical anti-inflammatory activity, though musculoskeletal evidence remains limited.
  3. Scalp and hair condition: Helps reduce dryness, flaking, brittleness, and frizz by moisturising the scalp and coating the hair shaft.
  4. Lash and brow conditioning: Supports a fuller-looking, more conditioned appearance with consistent overnight use.
  5. General skin wellness: Naturally occurring antioxidant content may support overall skin health and appearance.
How to use

Use a small amount — a little goes a long way

  1. Face and body: Apply a small amount to clean, damp skin after showering, focusing on dry areas.
  2. Hair and scalp: Massage a small amount into dry roots and scalp. Leave for at least one hour or overnight, then shampoo thoroughly.
  3. Eyelashes and brows: Fill the applicator vial, wipe off excess, and apply carefully before bed. Keep oil out of the eyes.
  4. Carrier oil: Mix with essential oils before topical use when a thicker carrier oil is preferred.
  5. Patch test: Apply to the inside of the wrist and wait 24 hours before broader use.
  6. Storage: Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, heat, and open flame.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Castor oil has a long history of use in naturopathic and wellness settings, and its active component, ricinoleic acid, has demonstrated preliminary anti-inflammatory properties in peer-reviewed research. Lakeside Chiropractic stocks the Cliganic version because it is USDA certified organic, third-party tested, and a single-ingredient product with no fillers or additives.

For most people, yes. It is generally well tolerated when applied topically to intact skin. A small patch test on the inner wrist is recommended before widespread use. Discontinue if redness or irritation occurs.

Some patients use warm castor oil compresses over areas of joint or muscle discomfort. Research on ricinoleic acid supports topical anti-inflammatory activity, but the evidence is preliminary. Castor oil should not be relied on alone for musculoskeletal pain.

Direct clinical evidence for castor oil causing measurable hair growth in humans is limited. What is better supported is that it conditions the scalp, moisturises the follicle environment, and coats the hair shaft, which can create a fuller, healthier-looking appearance.

Castor oil is thicker and more viscous than most plant oils. That richness is part of what makes it useful as a barrier and conditioning agent. Nighttime use is often preferred, and only a small amount is needed.

The oil can be used around the lash line and brows, but it should not go into the eye. Use the applicator carefully, wipe off excess before applying, and rinse with clean water if contact occurs.

That depends on use. For hair and scalp use two to three times per week, a 473ml bottle can last six months or more. For daily lash and brow use, it will last considerably longer because very little is used per application.
