In this blog, we will cover the musculoskeletal (muscle, bone and joints) side of things. A future blog will discuss the neurogenic (nerve related) and inflammatory (including auto-immune) causes of neck pain.

One of the most common causes of musculoskeletal neck pain is poor posture. Poor posture is a bad habit that many of us struggle with. Whether it be from looking down at our phones, using the computer, standing poorly, or having non-optimal work ergonomics (think of low desks and high chairs, for example), it can be difficult to maintain a good posture for our necks. Even stress can put pressure onto our necks. Oftentimes, stress manifests itself into our necks and upper shoulders, causing the muscles to tighten and pull against each other. Either emotional or work stress all take their toll on your neck joints and muscles.

Having a poor posture can cause our joints to become fixated or stuck, which is not as uncommon as you may think. There are seven vertebral bodies in our neck with joints between each of the bodies, on both sides – that’s a lot of joints, and usually this is what allows us to have a lot of motion in our necks. However, once a joint becomes stuck, it can become difficult to turn your neck, and pain may manifest in the area.

Of course, there are also other more traumatic causes for neck pain. Work injuries or auto injuries for example can be very debilitating and painful. Click those links above for more information. Despite the traumatic nature of these injuries, Lakeside Chiropractic chiropractors may assist you here too. With our wide variety of treatment options, a treatment plan will be made catered to your needs.
