Do you experience ringing in your ears or any other sounds- buzzing, whistling, roaring, humming? You may have tinnitus, this is actually a symptom and not a disease in itself. The symptom is a problem in a person’s hearing system, which includes the ears and the brain. Tinnitus affects about 7% of the population and can be present in one or both ears.

The symptom “tinnitus” can be due to a variety of causes. There is not one specific disease that is responsible for tinnitus. This ringing noise may simply be due to ear wax, or a more sinister cause such as damage to the hearing nerve. However, a link between exposures to loud noises has been noted. The most common causes include: loud sounds, stress or trauma, Meniere’s disease, side effect of medications, structural issues within the ear itself, TMJ (jaw) disorders, and head or neck injuries.

What are the risk factors of Tinnitus (ear ringing)?

  • Exposure to loud noises- damage to small sensory hair cells in your ear that convey sound from your ear to brain.
  • Males are more likely to experience tinnitus.
  • Ageing reduces the amount of nerve fibres that function properly within.
  • Smokers are more likely to experience tinnitus.

Some complications associated with the presence of tinnitus include; fatigue, stress, sleep problems, difficulty concentrating, memory issues, depression and anxiety.

What treatment is available?

The actual cause of the symptom (tinnitus) must be sorted out, in order to initiate treatment and relieve you of the tinnitus. If it is earwax causing, then removal of the earwax will alleviate or decrease tinnitus symptoms. Changing medications that have this particular side effect. If the tinnitus is a result of whiplash or due to cervical joints (most commonly the suboccipital joint), then chiropractic adjustments or mobilisations could be indicated.
