Sports Injuries advice Lakeside Chiropractic Joondalup Perth

There are a variety of injuries you may get from playing sport. This obviously depends on the type of sport you participate in or even the position that you play in a team. Many structures are at risk when participating in physical activity including: Ligaments, tendons, bones, cartilage, muscles, nerves and joints. Chiropractic is a non-invasive form of treating musculoskeletal sports injuries, which are not serve enough for surgery. However, chiropractic is not only useful post injury whilst you are recovering, it plays a high role in the prevention. Chiropractic ensures proper body biomechanics which is a crucial factor in injury prevention. This means we focus on the movement and function of muscles and joints not just at the site of problem, but the body as a whole. For example, abnormal knee biomechanics can lead to associated foot or hip injuries.

What do we do after an injury occurs?

  • At the time of injury and up to 48 hours, apply the RICE protocol Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation. This will reduce the pain and swelling form the inflammatory response and prevent further damage.
  • Gentle movement will prevent muscle or joint stiffness from the preceding injury.
  • Begin strengthening the area, ensuring it doesn’t exceed pain and injury barriers. Start with slow movements, gradually increasing the intensity.
  • Treat structures above and below the affected area. Maintaining strength, flexibility and normal biomechanics of surrounding structures is vital.
