Is shoulder pain keeping you awake at night? If so avoid lying on it as it tends to make it worse. The night pain is due to the body’s response to inflammation. Chiropractic treatment may help with this inflammation.

Are you unable to comb or wash your hair? This is a sign that you shoulder needs attention. We have exercises on our website, shoulder exercises that can assist in recovery.

The shoulder is the most freely moving joint in the body, which is why it is commonly injured. The shoulder is surrounded by ligaments, muscles and tendons that provide strength and generate the movement. However, these structures can all be affected with the overuse or abnormal motion of the shoulder. The most common conditions related to these structures include:

  • The Rotator cuff is comprised of four muscles the supraspinatus, infraspinatus, subscapularis and teres minor. Injury to the rotator cuff is most commonly seen in athletes or those that perform routine tasks that puts a sudden strain on the shoulder, damaging one of these four muscles.
  • “Frozen Shoulder”/ Adhesive capsulitis is when scar tissue forms around the shoulder. It tends to present as a dull or aching pain and loss of motion and stiffness in the shoulder.
  • “Slap Lesion”/ Superior labral tear is damage to the cartilage that covers the top of the            shoulder. It can present as a clicking with movement or pain in the front or top of the shoulder.
  • Shoulder Impingement syndrome is seen in older adults. Blood flow is reduced to muscles causing them to become rope like. Symptoms include pain and difficulty with reaching behind and overhead.

The supraspinatus, one of the major rotator cuff muscles is commonly affected. The muscle acts as a stabilizer for the arm in the shoulder. Trigger points from this muscle tends to refer to the mid shoulder and part way down the arm, as a deep ache. Patients often find reaching above the shoulder difficult and some experience shoulder pain at night, interrupting sleep.
