Sciatica Chiropractic Treatment

Sciatica is a condition involving pain radiating from the lower back down through the buttock to one or both legs. Sciatica is caused by pressure upon the nerves of the lower back and can also be due to a slipped or herniated disc. The pain a patient experiences depends on the frequency, duration and severity of the injury. The condition causes nerves to swell and negatively effects patients by producing pain in the lower body.

Some common signs and symptoms involved with sciatica include:

  1. Numbness in your legs
  2. Sharp shooting pain along the sciatica nerve
  3. Unilateral pain through your lower body
  4. Pain standing or sitting on hard surfaces
  5. Difficulty breathing, panic attacks and anxiety
  6. Dull aches in the posterior, buttock and calf

As well as signs and symptoms there are also risk factors involved with sciatica including, diabetes, between the ages of 30-50, genetics, sedentary lifestyle, menopause and activities involving repetitive lifting or frequent twisting actions for example, golf.

Treatment for sciatica can be in the form of self-care including, rest but not prolonged rest, ice packs/heat packs, Theracumin, resting the back and maintaining a proper posture and gentle exercises to strengthen and support the lower back.

Chiropractic treatment is also a very common treatment for sciatica as it may reduce the pain and discomfort and enhance everyday activities.  Chiropractic care treats sciatica through manual adjustments, to help re-align the spine and ease off the pressure placed upon the nerves involved. After the pressure is relieved the body initially starts to heal itself and a management is tailored by the chiropractor to speed up your recovery in the fastest time possible. Spinal manipulation for sciatica firstly produces an anti-inflammatory response to alleviate the pain and then restores normal range of motion to help patients continue daily activities without feeling a constant achy pain through their lower back and legs.
