In a recent study by Cassidy JD et al., undertaken in Canada, 15, 523 incident cases of carotid artery stroke that were admitted to hospital were compared to 62, 092 control periods. Patient’s exposure to chiropractic and primary care physicians were established from health billing records over a 9 year period. Carotid stroke artery symptoms were found for both chiropractic and primary care physician visits and there were no significant risk estimate differences between the two.
Furthermore, associations between chiropractic care, primary care, physician care and stroke were likely due to patients who presented with early dissection-related symptoms who were seeking care prior to developing their strokes. Overall, the study found no excess risk of carotid artery stroke following chiropractic care.
