Magnetic Resonance Imaging MRI

Magnetic Resonance Imaging also known as an MRI uses a large magnet and radio waves to look at various structures within your body. Health care professionals use MRI scans to diagnose a wide variety of different conditions from torn ligaments to tumours, within the chiropractic clinic setting they are mostly used for the diagnosis of musculoskeletal conditions like some of the ones mentioned below:

  • Acute/chronic inflammation
  • Disc derangement
  • Nerve root entrapment
  • Sciatica
  • Knee cartilage injuries
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Shoulder injuries
  • Rotator cuff tears of the shoulder
  • Unexplained headaches
  • Coccyx pain
  • Hip impingement/labral tears

A MRI is often one of the best ways to aid in diagnosis of certain medical conditions or to show certain problems within the body. MRI is also often used to provide additional information to other tests, such as an X-ray or an ultrasound.

Preparing for an MRI:

It is important to have an idea of what to expect and how to prepare before having a MRI. The MRI scanner is a large machine with a hollow tunnel through it. There is a table that runs through the tunnel, in which the patient lies. To ensure it is safe for you to have a MRI you’re required to a fill out a form to indicate if there are any contraindications. If you have a pacemaker or other metal objects you are required to let the radiologist know so an alternative test can be arranged.

Other objects in your body that may cause harm or be damaged are: pacemakers, aneurysm clips, heart valve replacements, neurostimulators, cochlear implants, metal fragments in the eye, metal foreign bodies, magnetic dental implants and drug infusion pumps. Some of these implants, particularly more recent devices, might be safe to go into the MRI scanner, but have to be accurately identified for the scan to proceed.
