Lower back and pelvic pain can be very debilitating preventing you from going about your daily activities. There are many causes of pain referral to these sites, so it is important to identify the exact source and receive the appropriate treatment and care for your lower back or pelvic pain.

The most common cause of your pelvic or low back pain could be due to sacroiliac dysfunction. The sacroiliac joint (SIJ) is the two bony prominences you can feel right at the bottom of your back, just above the buttock area on both sides. This joint connects your sacrum to your pelvis. The symptoms of SIJ dysfunction: pain at the joint itself, buttock pain with possible leg pain, lower back pain on one side, pain when moving from sit to stand or when you weight bear. SIJ (pelvic) pain is usually aggravated by sitting, lying on affected side, prolonged driving, weight bearing on affected side, and when you bend forward with legs straight. Chiropractors are trained in the diagnosis and treatment of SIJ (pelvic) pain. The chiropractors at Lakeside Chiropractic are able treat it by one or more of these options: manipulation, mobilisation, dry needling surrounding muscles, stretching, provide advice, specific exercises or interferential.

Another cause of lower back or pelvic pain is a condition called Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS), which is a form of spinal arthritis.  This form of lower back or pelvic pain will present mostly in males that are younger than 45 years of age. AS will have slow onset of lower back or buttock pain, stiffness, symmetric posterior hip pain, morning stiffness for less than 30 minutes, improvement with light exercise, not relieved by rest and you may have symptoms of fever and malaise.  As there is no cure to this spinal arthritis, the chiropractors here at Lakeside Chiropractic - Joondalup can assist manage the symptoms of AS. This can be done with light mobilisation of the joint, soft tissue therapy and dry needling to surrounding musculature. Manipulation to other parts of your spine as they may take on a compensatory role due to the pelvic stiffness and pain. Specific postural advice and exercise will also be provided to you by our chiropractors. 

Reiter’s syndrome (Reactive Arthritis) causes pain and stiffness in the lower back and posterior hip/ pelvis. This form of arthritis is associated with conjunctivitis and urethritis, where it is usually follows a gastrointestinal or genitourinary infection. It affects more than one joint, typically in the lower limbs. It is a relatively sudden onset with 2-4 joints being affected within a few days. The chiropractors at Lakeside Chiropractic may play a significant role in the recovery phase of Reactive Arthritis by promoting good movement, strengthening and education on how to assist in the recovery.

Psoriatic Arthritis is another form of spinal arthritis with a slow development of low back pain. This is usually seen in individuals 30-50 years of age. 30% of patients will have associated psoriasis (patches of red, itchy, scaly skin), and 80% will have pitting nail lesions. You may experience a generalised fatigue, tenderness, pain and swelling over tendons, morning stiffness and tiredness and conjunctivitis. Our chiropractors have the skills and knowledge to identify this specific cause of your lower back pain and refer you to a rheumatologist for appropriate care. 

There are many other cause of lower back and pelvic pain including muscles strains or sprains, referral from facet joints or discs, fractures, or possibly more severe life threatening conditions such as cauda equina syndrome, infections, haemorrhage or tumours.
