Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is a disorder where pain in the hand is caused due to pressure applied to nerves that run through the wrist.  The pain is caused by excess pressure which leads to inflammation, or as a result of obstructed blood flow. Along with the pain, numbness, pins and needles can also be present. Fingers may be swollen as well as weakness in your hands.

Carpal tunnel is a space in the palm side of wrist made of wrist bones that are connected by rigid ligaments. It protects vital structures including your median nerve which controls movement and sensation to your thumb and your first three fingers.

Carpal tunnel can be a result of mechanical stress or disease related. The most common causes include:

  • Strong gripping

  • Repetitive hand motions

  • Awkward hand positioning

  • Mechanical stress on the palm

  • Vibration

  • Pregnancy

  • Arthritis

  • Diabetes

  • Gout

  • Hypothyroidism
  • You can prevent Carpal Tunnel by lifestyle adjustments that will reduce the risk factors of developing certain diseases. Avoiding over extension of your wrist and awkward hand positioning will also reduce your chances of developing Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.
