Can I be too injured to Receive Chiropractic Care for my Low Back

Dr Schiller with chiropractorsThere is no amount of pain in the lower back, which a person can’t receive chiropractic for. Chiropractors utilise different treatment modalities and modify the way they treat to suit the different levels of severity. More often than not, if a patient is in severe pain and is finding it extremely difficult to ambulate (move), the chiropractor will focus highly on soft tissue work instead of spinal manipulation and utilise gentle mobilisations in an attempt to free up some tension. Soft tissue work can be in many forms including:

  1. Thumper
  2. Interferential machine
  3. Back Pain
  4. Massage
  5. Acupuncture/dry needling
  6. Pin and stretch
  7. Trigger Point Therapy
  8. Flexion Distraction
  9. Thermotherapy/Cryotherapy

Chiropractors have been revolutionary in the management of low back pain, with their vast range of techniques. Their level of knowledge and expertise will determine if the patient’s condition is worth referring on to the GP or radiology clinic to examine it further. There are a number of red flags chiropractors look for to determine if further investigations are warranted including, but not limited to:

  1. Severe Osteoporosis
  2. Progressive or sudden neurological disorders
  3. Pain at night
  4. Fever/rashes other constitutional symptoms
  5. Urinary incontinence
  6. Cardiovascular problems
  7. Long term use of certain drugs e.g. corticosteroids
  8. Unintentional weight loss or gain

Dr Schiller making a chiropractic adjustmentChiropractors are trained in recognising these red flag symptoms in patients, and appropriately refer them on to other health professionals that can do further investigations to formulate a diagnosis.
