Bursitis Hip Bursitis Shoulder Bursitis Elbow or Knee Bursitis

Your bursa is a fluid filled sac that lies between your tendons, muscles and bones, acting as a cushion. Bursitis occurs when there is irritation to the bursa resulting in swelling and pain. Bursitis is most common in adults over 40 years of age, as the tendons age they become less tolerant to stress and are less elastic, meaning a tear is more likely to occur. Bursitis most commonly occurs in the shoulder, hip, knee, elbow and rarely the in the achilles tendon.

Common causes of bursitis:

  • Age- Tendons are less durable and resistant to stress.
  • Repetitive movements to an area (overuse injuries)
  • Minor or more sudden impact to an area
  • Incorrect posture
  • Poor conditioning or stretching before exercise
  • Stress or inflammation from other conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, gout or thyroid disorders.
  • Hyperpronation of feet
  • High Q angle from Hip to knee
  • Fall onto hip , knee, elbow or shoulder
  • Overhead work

If you have bursitis, the affected joint may:

  • Feel achy or stiff
  • Hurt more when you move it or press it
  • Look swollen or red
  • Painful- the most common symptom will be pain in that immediate area.
