Chiropractic & Pregnancy

It is reported that around 50% of all pregnant women experience back pain during their pregnancy and up to 75% experience it during labor. Despite this, only 21% of pregnant woman consult their medical physician about the problem and only 6% visited a Chiropractor. However, another study reported that 75% of pregnant woman that consulted a Chiropractor reported benefit.

Chiropractors can provide relief during pregnancy through advice and by relaxing and relieving muscles and joints that come under stress from the biomechanical changes that occur during this time. This includes increased lumbar lordosis, flexion of the hips and external rotation of the legs to name a few.
A retrospective case series performed on pregnant woman has shown that no adverse reactions to Chiropractic care were recorded. This study also showed that an average of 1.8 treatments were required to provide significant relief.

Chiropractic may also be of benefit after delivery. This is because the body needs to return to its pre-pregnancy status. Chiropractors can help rehabilitate weakened spinal and abdominal muscles as well as assist in the restoration of normal spinal biomechanics.
