Do I need a referral to see a chiropractor?

No, you do not need a referral to see a chiropractor. As Chiropractors are primary care professionals. Patients can make an appointment directly with us at Lakeside Chiropractic Clinic without the need for a referral from a doctor or another healthcare professional.

However if you are booking in for a bulk billed (Medicare – TCA/EPC) session you require a referral letter and Medicare form from your GP, for more information on Bulk Billing

Do you take private health insurance?

Yes, we do accept private health insurance. We work with a variety of private health insurance providers. Since your health fund cover is tailored personally we are unable to say exactly how much your fund will cover for your appointment.

There are a couple of ways to find out should you want to know prior to visiting us for your appointment what your health fund will be covering for your appointment. You can contact your health fund with the initial appointment specific chiropractic code (1002) and regular (1005) or you can visit us in the clinic and we can do a manual quote through our HICAPS machine for you.

We work with all private health fund that covers Chiropractic services, but we are also preferred providers of BUPA and MEDIBANK, which means you get discounted price if you are a member of BUPA or MEDIBANK.

Why should I see a Chiropractor?

There are several reasons for you to see a Chiropractor for pain relief, improved mobility, injury recovery, and more. Chiropractic is commonly sought for various musculoskeletal issues like back pain, neck pain, headaches, joint/ nerve problems and extremities complaints (including shoulders, knees and more).

Who can have chiropractic care? Any age limit?

Chiropractic care is suited for a wide range of individuals, people of various ages and health conditions may benefit from chiropractic treatment.

What conditions do chiropractors treat?

Chiropractors primarily focus on musculoskeletal issues and conditions related to the spine, upper and lower limbs. Some of the common conditions that chiropractors treat include: neck pain, headaches, lower back pain, joint pain and stiffness, disc pain, sports injuries, soft tissue injuries, sciatica, posture related problems and repetitive strain injuries.

What to expect for my first initial visit at Lakeside Chiropractic?

Our chiropractors will perform a thorough history examination to find out more about your complaint, after that a physical assessment is conducted which will help to narrow down your exact diagnosis (please wear loose clothing). Lastly combining the findings of the history and exam we will formulate a diagnosis and create a personalized treatment plan for your recovery or maintenance. If required the chiropractor can refer you for scans (bulked billing x-rays, MRI, CT scans) to see a more in depth study of any structural abnormalities.

You will also receive treatment on your initial visit unless deemed unsuitable in some rare cases.

What are the joint cracks or pops caused by?

The chiropractic adjustment typically involves a controlled, high velocity low amplitude force applied to a specific joint to improve its range of motion. This adjustment might produce a popping sound similar to cracking knuckles, which is caused by the release of gas bubbles between joints.

Does a chiropractic adjustment hurt?

Chiropractic adjustments are generally not painful, though sensations can vary from person to person. You might feel some pressure or mild discomfort as the chiropractor applies force to adjust your joints. Most people find relief from discomfort after the adjustment. There are other ways to do a gentle adjustment such as mobilisations, instrument adjustments and drop piece. It's essential to communicate any concerns or discomfort you feel during the session with your chiropractor so they can adjust their technique or approach accordingly.

After your first session of chiropractic care you may feel tenderness for a few days after which is completely normal for new patients. This is due to the adjustments that have been made which has activated muscle groups which aren’t usually used. We recommend applying heat to the area which will aid muscle recovery.

I am in too much pain and I’m not sure if I can be adjusted?

If you're in severe pain and concerned about undergoing a chiropractic adjustment, it's crucial to communicate this to the chiropractor. They can adjust their techniques or offer alternative therapies or modalities that might be more comfortable for you.

Our chiropractors here at Lakeside Chiropractic Clinic have various methods to address pain without performing chiropractic adjustments. They might use gentle techniques, such as mobilization or low-force instrument adjustments to help alleviate discomfort. Additionally, they may employ therapies like heat, ice, massage, or electrical stimulation, which can often provide relief without the need for forceful manipulations.

Always be open and honest about your pain levels and concerns with your chiropractor. They can tailor the treatment to make it as comfortable as possible for you. If you're unsure about chiropractic adjustments, discussing your options with the chiropractor beforehand may alleviate any worries and find the best approach for your condition.

If the pain is too much and you are unable to drive, we do offer home visits to the surrounding suburbs of Joondalup. Read more about Home Visits here.
